Technoscience at the 24th SIAMOC Congress: Machine Learning and Innovation in Rehabilitation

Innovation and rehabilitation
From 2 to 5 October 2024, Stresa hosted the 24th SIAMOC National Congress, bringing together professionals involved in the study and optimisation of human movement, including engineers, orthopaedic physicians, physiotherapists and kinesiologists. The congress provided an opportunity to discuss and review the latest innovations in rehabilitation and movement analysis.

The Studio

Technoscience participated in the event presenting the study “Identification of compensatory movements by a single low-cost inertial sensor during rehabilitation exercises”, developed in collaboration with the University of Rome Foro Italico and the University of Tuscia. The study introduces a new approach in the use of wearable sensors and IoT technologies for the evaluation of rehabilitation exercises, with particular attention to the identification of compensatory movements.
Thanks to a single low-cost inertial sensor, the collected data was processed through models machine learning to accurately identify compensatory movements during exercise performance. This system is expected to be particularly effective in telerehabilitation, offering new solutions to remotely monitor patients and improve access to rehabilitation care.

The Results

The results highlight the potential of this technology, paving the way for more precise and personalised management of rehabilitation pathways and reducing logistical barriers for patients and healthcare professionals.
Technoscience continues to be committed to developing innovative solutions for the rehabilitation sector, supporting professionals and improving the quality of life of patients through cutting-edge technologies.
Particular thanks are addressed to Federico Caramia, Valentina Camomilla, Leandro Lucangeli, Emanuele D'Angelantonio and Eleonora Bellucci, for their essential contribution to the project.

How we turn ideas into projects

From initial assessment to validation: a collaborative method that turns knowledge, technologies and business needs into concrete initiatives.

01

Discovery and assessment

We start from the need, the scientific result or the available technology. We assess objectives, maturity, data, constraints and opportunities to define an initial realistic pathway.

02

Expertise and project design

We connect scientific and industrial partners and define activities, milestones, responsibilities and funding sources aligned with the expected outcome.

03

Validation and impact

We support experimentation, technology transfer and valorisation, measuring results and preparing the solution for its next step: adoption, partnership or market.

To rapidly assess a project in biotech and translational medicine - from oncology and neuroscience to precision cardiology and telemedicine - we ask for: a clear clinical or industrial question, the available evidence (including negative findings), access to data and samples where applicable, a draft protocol (including ethical aspects), and hypotheses on biomarkers and endpoints. In return, we offer technical and scientific due diligence, the design of a credible TRL pathway and, where appropriate, support with regulatory strategy, validation and scalability.
